The service year is when many Nigerian graduates write their first serious CV — for graduate trainee programmes, post-NYSC jobs and retention at their place of primary assignment. The good news: you have more experience than you think. The trick is presenting it properly.

How to show your NYSC status

Employers ask about NYSC because most graduates need a discharge certificate (or an exemption or exclusion certificate) to be employed after school. Put it where it’s easy to find, either as its own short section or under Education:

  • While serving: “NYSC — Currently serving (passing out: [month year])”
  • After service: “NYSC — Certificate of National Service, [month year]”
  • If exempted or excluded: “NYSC — Certificate of Exemption, [year]” (or Certificate of Exclusion)

Your expected passing-out date matters: it tells a recruiter exactly when you can start full-time.

Your PPA is real work experience

Your place of primary assignment (PPA) goes under Experience, like any job. Use your actual role, not just “Corps member”:

Graduate Assistant (NYSC) — Ministry of Finance, Ilorin · Apr 2026 – present
• Reconciled monthly payment vouchers for 3 departments, cutting the backlog from 6 weeks to 1.
• Built an Excel tracker now used by the whole unit to monitor approvals.

Even if your PPA is teaching in a secondary school, there’s plenty to show: subjects and classes taught, students’ results, clubs you ran, records you managed.

CDS, SAED and other service-year wins

  • Community Development Service (CDS): if you led or delivered a project — a health outreach, a school library, a skills workshop — list it with numbers: “Coordinated a free eye-screening outreach for 400 residents with a 12-member CDS group.”
  • SAED (Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development): a practical skill you picked up — graphic design, digital marketing, catering — belongs in Skills, and real projects belong in your portfolio.
  • Leadership roles: CDS group leader, platoon leader at camp, an executive role in a corps association — short lines, but they show responsibility.
  • Commendations: any commendation letter or award you receive during service.

Don’t forget SIWES, internships and school projects

Your SIWES/industrial training placement, internships, part-time work, tutoring and any freelance jobs all count. So does your final-year project if it’s relevant to the job: one line on the topic and one on the result or skill it demonstrates.

Tailor it for graduate trainee programmes

Big graduate programmes — in banking, FMCG, energy, consulting and tech — attract thousands of applicants and often screen automatically before anyone reads your CV. Check the advert for the minimum class of degree, age limit and NYSC requirement, and make sure your CV shows clearly that you meet them. Then mirror the skills the advert lists, using the same words where they’re true for you.

A link to real work isn’t just for designers. A finance graduate can share a cleaned-up Excel model; a writer, three articles; a teacher, a lesson plan and results; a developer, a GitHub project. On iSabi you can put these on a free portfolio page and print its QR code on your CV.

Quick checklist before you send

  • One page (two at most), saved as a PDF with your name in the file name
  • NYSC status and passing-out date clearly stated
  • PPA, SIWES and CDS written as achievements, not duties
  • Class of degree included if the role screens for it
  • A professional email and a phone number that’s switched on
  • Date of birth only if the advert has an age limit or the form asks for it
